Today is Easter, 4/20, and the Hunky Jesus contest all rolled up into one. Here's your guide to keeping it cool.
Though yesterday featured the Spring Eggstravaganza family Easter egg hunt at Sharon Meadows, there's another Easter Egg hunt today, this one put on by the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. The order normally holds the event in Dolores Park but moved locations temporarily while the other park undergoes renovations.
This year, the Sisters' (35th annual!) Easter celebration will be a special "Emerald Jubilee," attracting what police estimate to be at least 5,000 people to Hellman Hollow. The egg hunt starts at 10 am, then the full set of live events begins at noon, including live bands, the Easter Bonnet Contest, the ever-popular Hunky Jesus competition, and a new Foxy Mary prize. It all ends at 4 pm.
The main—explicitly unofficial—event begins back up the park at Sharon Meadow, well, whenever. But 4:20pm is when the marijuana smoking holiday consummates for the many Northern California cultures that celebrate it, so plan for that. And also plan for the inevitable spillover onto Haight Street before, during, and after.
As always, stay safe and stay sane, however you choose to celebrate your Sunday.
