A Nun's Life: Sister Rose Mary ChickenPhoto: Chloe Shi and Jieqian Zhang

The Castro Courier has posted a very special short video highlighting the life of one Robbie Nothstine, aka Sister Rose Mary Chicken, a Sister of Perpetual Indulgence.

In the video, Nothstine talks about the circumstances of his childhood and his young adult life and how he became inspired to reach out to others and don the persona of Sister Rose Mary Chicken.

"My Sister identity, it gives me courage to be kind when I put the makeup and the outfit on. It gives me courage to be nice to people. And in turn, they're nice back." says Nothstine in the video. "In my life, my Sister life has brought me up."

Nothstine first encountered the Sisters at Palm Springs Gay Pride in 2006:

I was sitting in the bleachers watching the teenage dance troupe entertain the few, when I saw a group of nuns enter the grounds. I was pulled to get up and ask about who they were and what they did. So I met Sister Unity Divine from Los Angeles, and she explained it all to me while she screamed lewd comments to the cheer leading squad. She had me in stitches.

That's when I heard the calling.

Nothstine has been an official member of the queer nun order since 2013, loves to sing, and performs with the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus, in addition to nun duties and a job at Fast Frame on Market.

About the Sister's mission, Nothstine says, "Our mission is to spread a little joy and to make people feel less guilty about who they are."
