Now that you've had plenty of time to recover from the grogginess triggered by Daylight Saving Time, here are a few events going on in and around the neighborhood this weekend.
Friday, March 13th
Just one month after the last Friday the 13th, it's back again. While this week hasn't been the luckiest of weeks for Lucky 13 after it was reported that it could be replaced by a condo development, you can help wash away a little bit of that bad luck by stopping by for a few pints of beer. After you've done your best to ward of the evil spirits at Lucky 13, head on over to the Castro Theatre at 8pm for a Double Feature of 'A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night' and 'Messiah Of Evil.' These two films are filled with vampires and the undead, respectively, and will ensure you spend a freaky Friday in the Castro.
Saturday, March 14th
Every year Pi Day, 3/14, is celebrated by math nerds and pie lovers alike, but this year is extra special: for the first and last time this century, the day will fall on 3/14/15, which are the first five digits of Pi.
Pi Day was originally founded right here in San Francisco 27 years ago by physicist Larry Shaw at the Exploratorium, which will be having its own celebration that includes free museum entry. If you're looking to fill your pie craving in the Castro, stop by Chile Pies, where in honor of National Pi Day, they'll be serving up a slice of Mexican Chocolate Pecan Pie for $3.14. Chile Pies also has a variety of other pies as well, and as they've said, "the pi sibilities are endless!"
After you'd had enough pie and corny math jokes, head on over to Beaux for The Playground. Bebe Sweetbriar, Sister Roma and Donna Sachet host the event, inspired by the notion of ensuring "the Castro doesn't die and bringing back the positive, creative energy that inspired us all." In the words of Sister Roma, "Let's not forget that long before there was Las Vegas, San Francisco was the original Sin City. People have always flocked here disappear in to the fog, reinvent themselves and enjoy the delights of our decadent adult playground."
Sunday, March 15th
While CAAMFest 2015, which runs March 12th-22nd, kicked off at the Castro Theatre last night, Sunday will be your only chance to catch some of the films at the Castro Theatre. Hosted by The Center for Asian America Media (CAAM), the festival is "dedicated to presenting stories that convey the richness and diversity of Asian American experiences to the broadest audience possible." Over 200 guests will be flying in during the festival, the theme of which this year is "Destination CAAMFest," with films not only showing in San Francisco, but at theaters around the Bay Area. Films start at 12pm on Sunday with a short program and feature films running all throughout the day; here's the lineup.
While the start of baseball season is still a few weeks away, Sunday marks Opening Day for the San Francisco Gay Softball League (SFGSL). After playing games all throughout the day, players will be descending on the Castro afterwards to celebrate another year of playing ball. There are events planned all across the Castro at a variety of different bars, from Toad Hall to The Edge, Qbar, Midnight Sun and Beaux, and cheap beer, Jell-O shots and tons of fun are guaranteed. Stop on by and show your support.
