FIFTY24SF director Trevor Martin says that bringing the work of Hajime Sorayama to the gallery at 218 Fillmore St. is a highlight of his career.

“He revolutionized what people think of as pin-up art and airbrush, he is perhaps the best painter in the world when it comes to rendering metallic surfaces, his art has been featured in everything from Apple ads to Penthouse, he's designed things for Disney and Sony, I mean, where do I stop?” Martin said when asked how he would describe Sorayama’s work to the uninitiated.

“The guy is a genius. He's a recipient of the Vargas award, he has work in the MOMA, Smithsonian and Library of Congress. He also happens to be my favorite artist of all time ever since I was 12 and saw his work in the 25th anniversary issue of Penthouse.”

Well, then!

Hajime Sorayama first gained international fame with the publication of his 1983 book Sexy Robot, which featured the pin-up-inspired paintings of robotic figures or gynoids he is still known for today. He also, interestingly enough, created the first designs for Sony’s AIBO robotic pet dog.

The print show by Hajime Sorayama opens at FIFTY24SF tomorrow (April 4th) with a party at 7pm. Upper Playground will be open late if you want to pop over there and grab some new gear, but Sorayama himself will not be in attendance. The flyer is below.

FIFTY24SF is open Wed-Sun 12-6pm.
