Do you have that sneaking suspicion that you're forgetting something? That's right: this Sunday is Mother's Day, and if you haven't already made plans, now's the time to scramble for last-minute brunch reservations and plan out how to celebrate the maternal figures in your life.
Here's what's happening in the neighborhood this Mother's Day weekend:
Friday, May 8th
Triple Feature
Jesse Hawthorne Ficks' monthly 'Midnites For Maniacs' Triple Feature is back at the Castro Theatre. This month's theme, A Tribute To Penelope Spheeris, who will be in person for a Q&A, will screen "The Decline of Western Civilization" (7pm), "Wayne's World" (9:15pm) and "The Metal Years: Decline II" (11:30pm).
Myriad Preview
Upcoming food marketplace Myriad may have nailed down a cocktail bar and butcher shop, but it's still looking for more venders for the "market hall" on Market Street. From 6pm-9pm tonight, head over for an open house to get an exclusive first look at the space and meet the owners. Interested in being a vender? More info here.
Orange Friday
Put on your orange Giants gear and head on out to your favorite neighborhood bar to watch the Giants, who are in town taking on the Marlins in a four-game series. Tonight will see Tim Lincecum coming off eight shutout innings against the Angels last weekend. First pitch is at 7:15pm; Go Giants!
Saturday, May 9th
Safety
Looking to help keep the neighborhood safe? This Saturday, the Castro Community On Patrol is hosting its volunteer training class from 1pm-4:30pm. Volunteers are asked to commit to a minimum of three hours per month or 12 hours per year, and duties include distributing safety awareness information, presenting a visible presence for those in need, and filing general crime prevention and safety reports with local agencies. Pre-registration is required in order to attend the training.
Community
Join Empress Khmera Rouge and Emperor Kevin Lisle for their monthly fundraiser "Special K Saturdays! at Beaux" benefitting the AIDS Emergency Fund, Breast Cancer Emergency Fund and other organizations that fight hunger. "All you can drink Beerbust, Open Drag Show, Raffles and good times" are all part of the plan.
Comedy
Peaches Christ invites you to the Castro Theatre for the world premier of highly anticipated pre-show parody spectacular "Drop Dead Gorgeous," starring Bendelacreme as Gladys, Jinkx Monsoon as Anette, Pandora Boxx as Loretta and Suppositori Spelling as Amber. Following the pre-show, the teen queens will battle it out for the tiara at the "Rosebud Cosmetics American Queen Princess Pageant," followed by a screening of the movie "Drop Dead Gorgeous". (Shows at 3pm and 8pm; Get your tickets here.)
Sunday, May 10th
Fresh Air
Sunday Streets Mission takes place on Sunday from 11am-4pm, and with no planned event in the Castro this year, this will be the closest neighborhood that you can go to in order to enjoy the event, which closes streets to vehicle traffic and includes games, yoga, dancing, music and more. (Note: This will be a great opportunity to take mom on a stroll.)
Beer Bust
If you're not busy spending the day with mom (or even if you are), AIDS Lifecycle Team Bottoms Up invites you to show off what your momma gave you at their fundraiser, "I Got It From My Momma." There's less than the month until participants take off on their ride and they could use your help raising money for the San Francisco AIDS Foundation. They'll have a $10 bottomless beer bust and Jell-O shots, along with a raffle that includes two tickets to Great America. (Qbar, 4pm-8pm.)
Drag
And finally, if you're looking to catch some drag in the Castro this weekend, Big Top Sundays at Beaux is the place to be. Round out your Sunday with a Drag Mothers' Day Extravaganza at 9pm, featuring RuPaul's Drag Race Season 4 runner-up and Cher impersonator Chad Michaels.
