Two Jack’s Wants To Add Parklet, Poetry To Haight & WebsterAndrew Dudley / Hoodline

If the comments on Hoodline’s 2010 profile of Two Jack’s Nik's Place are any indication, many local residents had regularly passed by the Southern comfort food restaurant at Haight and Webster and been intrigued, if not yet moved to venture inside.

By now, you may have stopped by the homey restaurant to sample the old family recipes on which owner Nikki Cooper bases the Two Jack’s menu. But soon, if all goes according to Cooper’s plan, you won’t have to even step foot inside the building to take a load off, chat with your neighbors and grab a bite.

Cooper is applying for a parklet to be installed outside of Two Jack’s at 401 Haight St. “The purpose of the parklet is to help enhance the aesthetics of the 400 block and to provide a beautiful safe seating area that is accessible to our multigenerational and diverse community,” Cooper tells Hoodline.

The parklet will also serve as an outdoor space for a monthly poetry event, which Cooper intends to call "Poetry in the Parklet."

Cooper says plenty of neighbors, fellow merchants and the Lower Haight Merchants and Neighbors Association are supportive of the project. They have some design ideas in mind, but the details are still being worked out ahead of the city's current May 29th deadline to file parklet applications.

If you want to see a parklet installed at Webster and Haight, or if you simply want to attend “Poetry in the Parklet” someday, stop by Two Jack’s or Wing Wings (422 Haight St.) and sign a petition in support of the project.

“Showing community support is a huge part of the application process so that is why we have the petitions going,” Cooper says. “We are extremely excited about continuing to be able to contribute to the advancement and improvement of the neighborhood and we are certain that when the project is complete it's going to be an awesome addition to our block.”
