Mid-June saw a variety of crime and safety incidents in the Castro, including assaults, theft, an update on a suspected tagger, and a bicycle/auto accident. In keeping with Hoodline's mission of reporting on quality-of-life issues, here's the latest on crime in the neighborhood.

Dog Walker Assault and Robbery

Hoodline reader Nicole M. sent us a tip about a robbery and assault:

My dog walker notified us that a fellow dog walker was mugged at 20th and Hartford. They tried to get the dog walker's keys (for all the houses of the dogs he takes care of) but only walked away with his wallet. He is in the hospital. Today I learned this is the sweet older gentleman I often see walking dogs on Hartford Street. New details today reveal there were four perps and they held him at gunpoint. Terrifying.

Nextdoor user Ashley M. also added to the conversation about the incident:

The assailants had a gun and hit the victim in the head, then took his wallet and attempted to also get his giant ring of keys (I assume to all of the houses where all the dogs live). A friend of the victim thinks that he was being watched and targeted for his large key ring.

The BAR also reported on this incident, as well as a separate robbery that occurred the same night.

Alleged Cryst Tagger Hearing

Followers of crime in the neighborhood may remember the March arrest of suspected tagger Andrew Yarbrough, the alleged serial vandal known for his “Cryst” tag. Yarbrough, who has been charged with 10 counts of felony vandalism and 19 misdemeanor counts of vandalism, will have a hearing on June 24th at 9:00am at the Hall of Justice, Department 20. He's alleged to have vandalized significant amounts of both public and private property, including businesses, homes, city property, and Muni property.

Bicycle/Auto Accident at Market and 16th

Twitter user Infinite Title (@8title) sent us a tip about an accident on June 18th.

Liberty Hill Thief

Nextdoor user Don L. posted a video and description of a suspected thief.

"This thief has been seen on three different occasions in the Liberty Hill area. Climbs over fences and breaks into the homes from the back or side. Operates at all times of the day. Sometimes disguises himself as a bicyclist or construction worker. Is to be considered armed and dangerous. if you see this man, call 911—do not attempt to apprehend. Pictures at end of video are only composite drawings of suspect and not an exact likeness."

We'll have updates on any crime and safety issues in the neighborhood during Pride week and weekend. Some general safety tips for Castro residents: be aware of your surroundings, travel in groups (especially later at night), and avoid using any distracting devices when walking.
