If you're a resident of District 3 and feeling uneasy about your level of fire safety preparedness, you can now get a free smoke alarm courtesy of Supervisor Julie Christensen's discretionary budget. Volunteers with SF Fire Department's NERT, the American Red Cross, the Alisa Ann Ruch Burn Foundation and IBEW Local 6 will install the alarms for residences located in District 3, which encompasses Chinatown, Embarcadero, Financial District, Fisherman's Wharf, Nob Hill, North Beach, Telegraph Hill, and part of Union Square.
More than 100 alarms will be installed this Saturday, and the next installation date will be July 27th. To sign up, call the American Red Cross at (415) 427-8185 and leave a message with your name, phone number, street address, and installation preference of morning or afternoon.
"We have a lot of wood-frame structures in the district," along with many multi-family dwellings, Christensen told us. "If your apartment burns, chances are your neighbor's apartment will burn," she added, saying that the entire building could go up in flames. The district has one fire fatality this year at 1050 Columbus Ave.
It's important to have more than one smoke alarm in your residence, according to SFFD's Home Fire Facts, which is chock-full of tips and statistics. Fire safety education will be provided during installation of the alarms as well.
