Fire Breaks Out In The Upper Haight [Updated]Photos: Amy Stephenson/Hoodline

Wasteland, Booksmith and El Faro have been evacuated and Haight Street has been closed from Clayton to Belvedere this evening as the SFFD responded to a fire in the area.

As of 5:45pm, witnesses reported that firefighters were on the roofs of the three buildings that had been evacuated, and that the fire may have originated from the Tikka Masala & Pizza building, though that's unconfirmed at this point. (Update: one SFFD respondent on the scene has told us that the fire originated from a residential unit above Tikka Masala and that it was "contained in a doorway.")

Service of the 6-Haight/Parnassus, 7-Haight/Noriega, and N-Judah shuttle is affected, with up to eight buses reported stuck on Haight at either end of the closure.

As of 6pm, firefighters were packing up and it appeared the fire had been extinguished. We'll update this story with more details about what happened as we get them.

Update, 6:54pm: The street closure has lifted and the first bus has been allowed to pass through.

Update, 7/13: According to the SFFD, the fire originated on an outside stairwell leading to a penthouse apartment. The resident tried to put it out with water, so that person was examined for smoke inhalation, but nobody was reported as injured. There was no damage to any businesses, and nobody was displaced.
