The weekend is poised to kick off, and we've got the word on local happenings in the neighborhood.
Friday, July 17th
Wendy MacNaughton at the De Young — Tonight, get ready for Friday Nights at the de Young, which will see a presentation by the fabulous Wendy MacNaughton, the local illustrator behind Meanwhile In San Francisco. The presentation, in the Piazzoni Murals Room, starts at 6:30pm tonight and includes a multimedia display of MacNaughton's work and process, to be followed by an author signing.
Admission to general access areas in the museum are free for Friday nights; there's a $15 charge for admission to special galleries. Meanwhile In San Francisco, originally published in March of last year, features illustrated portraits of our city's varied, various denizens in their many ways of life.
Tame Impala Listening Party — Swing by Amoeba tonight at 6pm to hear the new Tame Impala album, Currents, get free treats, and get a free poster with purchase of the album.
Saturday, July 18th
Community Clean Team Workday — More than 400 volunteers are expected to join Board of Supervisors President London Breed and Public Works’ crews for a summer spruce-up of the Haight, Golden Gate Park and surrounding neighborhoods, according to a press release. Projects include cleaning up Alvord Lake and the Panhandle and planting trees on the east end of Golden Gate Park; meet at Stanyan and Waller streets at 9am to participate.
The Queen is Dead — It's the third Saturday of the month, and that means the return of Milk Bar and Rusholme Ruffians' monthly tribute party for the music of Morrissey and The Smiths. (Milk Bar, 9pm.)
Sunday, July 19th
Adah's Stairway Volunteer Day — From 10am to noon, the newly ordained Adah's Stairway will be the site of a volunteer work day to put more than 100 new plants for the area in the ground. There are already 15 volunteers confirmed for the project, so if you want to show up and dig around noncommittally to enjoy the new space and the lovely weather, that's fine too.
San Francisco AIDS Walk — The Walk will kick off around 8:30 am in Golden Gate Park. The route is only inside Golden Gate Park, but remember that traffic will be impacted elsewhere; JFK Drive will be closed, of course, as will part of MLK Drive, . The start and finish will be near Sharon Meadow. The only way across the middle of the park by car between 6 am and 2 pm will be Crossover Drive. (The Great Highway and Stanyan will remain open, if possibly congested.)
If you're headed to the park Sunday to partake of the newish Turner exhibition at the de Young, remember to take public transit or use your feet.
Amoeba Records 20 Percent-Off Sale — Amoeba continues its 20 percent-off Sundays for the duration of the month; this Sunday the 19th the sale is applied to books, comics and mugs. The following Sunday will feature used DVDs and Blu-Rays. (Don't worry, you didn't miss a CD-and-record sale; they aren't discounting music.)
Last but not least, remember to watch those locks: two more hot prowl burglaries —— one of which was caught on camera — were reported in the wee hours of yesterday morning on the 400 block of Belvedere, between Parnassus and Grattan streets, one right across the street from the other. The burglaries occurred some time between 11 pm Wednesday and 7 am Thursday; officers were responding to one call when they got notice of the second.
This continues the trend of burglars hitting multiple houses in a small area on quiet, residential side-streets (the last rash was at the bottom of Downey Street). Remember that hot prowl burglaries mean victims were at home, so simply being around doesn't prevent someone from breaking in.
