North Beach Week: Pagoda Land Rush, La Boulange Rumors, News Tidbits And Weekend EventsCourtesy Arup Malakar / Flickr

It's been yet another eventful week in and around the neighborhood. Here's a recap of the latest:

Will 1741 Powell St. become a condo building or a subway station? The former Pagoda Theater site led the North Beach news cycle this week. On Tuesday, we reported on plans to build luxury condos on the site, and District 3 Supervisor Julie Christensen quickly responded, saying she and D8 Sup. Scott Wiener have plans in the works to push the city to buy the land for a future Central Subway station.

Concerns over homelessness continue to simmer. "It’s disgraceful that we as a society allow these people who are clearly mentally ill to be out roaming around. We need to do something and we need to do something quickly," said one woman at the neighborhood watch meeting for the Gateway Apartments and Townhomes along the Embarcadero, wherein residents shared concerns of robberies, auto break-ins and other safety concerns in the area.

The Top of Broadway Community Benefit District (CBD) spoke this week about their successful efforts in cleaning up the Broadway section of North Beach. Over the past year, they've handled 1,274 graffiti incidents, 606 illegal dumping incidents and more.

With only seven weeks to go, expect plenty of North Beach political news to come your way. This week, check out San Francisco Magazine's take on the D3 race. Quote: "For Mayor Lee and his inner circle, a Peskin victory would be akin to Victor Laszlo boarding the plane and soaring away at the end of Casablanca."

Wondering about the fate of the former North Beach La Boulange? So are we. This week, we reported that certain locations (Pac Heights, Hayes Valley, Cole Valley) will likely reopen soon with involvement from founder Pascal Rigo. Meanwhile, the SF Biz Times caught the news that L.A.-based Lemonade is looking at additional former locations. The plot thickens.

In other food news, we marked the opening of the East African restaurant Massawa on Green Street in the old HDR Smokin' Grill space. "This area is good to create a unique kind of food,” the manager told us.

In case you missed it last week, 7x7 had a roundup of where to stay, eat and drink if you're hanging around North Beach, and Chron critic Michael Bauer logged a review of the Italian eatery Ideale, on Grant Avenue near Vallejo.

In the local arts, Bill Weber's restored Jazz Mural at the corner of Broadway and Columbus was unveiled this week, so swing on by and check the revived work.

And finally, take a Vine ride with BigVicSF on the Las Casitas Railway, a private funicular that travels up and down the hill for residents of 717 Bay St.
