The fraught District 3 election voting is over and the tallies are starting to come in. Aaron Peskin has a slight lead to be the new supervisor based on the mail-in vote counts and early precinct results on the city election site.
Update: the election stats as of 10:36pm show Peskin winning with 100% of precincts reporting. While recent mail-in votes need to be officially counted, the outcome is likely already decided:
The new D3 supervisor, in turn, could be a tie-breaking vote between progressives and moderates on the broad range of legislation decided by the board.
Only voters in District 3 can pick their supervisor, per a rule that we examined more closely in this recent article.
If Pang stays in third place, the city's ranked-choice system will convert her supporters' second choices into votes for one of the top two candidates.
The process could play out for days, as this Examiner article looks at in more detail. But at least one other supervisor believes he knows the winner:
Congrats to @AaronPeskin. Looks like we will have a progressive majority at the Board of Supes for first time in years!
