The Upper Haight's fledgling First Thursday series is still kicking along. Pioneered by Adam Brodner of Goorin Bros., it's intended to give locals a chance to patronize the neighborhood's shops, which are often filled with tourists. The event took the summer off, but returned last month. Tonight's options include sales, fanfiction, an art opening, and more.
- Goorin Bros.: Goorin is partnering with Hobson's Choice for this month's event. The local bar will be serving punch at the hat shop from 5-8pm, along with food, a live band, and 15 percent off merchandise. An afterparty at Hobson's Choice kicks off at 8pm.
- Piper's Shoe Parlor: As always for First Thursday, Piper's will have a 15 percent discount on all merchandise.
- Mom's Tattoo Parlor: 20 percent off jewelry during First Thursday.
- Aviator Nation: Their first Thursday concert series is taking the month off for November, but will be back next month.
- The Red Victorian: The Red Vic is hosting a Supernatural Art Opening. Arielle Rose of Cirkus Waggon Inventions and Leo Olson (a.k.a. The Bone Witch) will present a full gallery show with a live runway, featuring fashions made from ethically sourced recycled materials. There will also be art from Mia Fremming, live music from Omphalea, and an appearance from the Bus and Bones Traveling Trunk. All ages, doors at 6pm.
- The Booksmith: As usual, the Booksmith (where this reporter also works) will host their monthly literary erotic fanfiction competition, Shipwreck. This month's book is Slaughterhouse-Five, featuring writers Madeline Gobbo, Lauren Parker, Louis Evans, Tara Marsden, Melissa Tan, and Meg Elison. $12 door, 7PM.
Brodner has set up a Facebook event, as well as a community page for First Thursdays in general, if you want to offer suggestions or just tell them how much fun you're having.
