The Powell Street BART station—a hub for locals who like to shop and dine in Union Square, and the BART system's busiest station on weekends—is finally going to get some fixing up, according to the Chronicle. Improvements will include a new ceiling, LED lighting, new flooring and seating on the platforms, fixes for the perennially problematic elevator and escalators, and more.
The upgrade will cost about $30 or $40 million, and should wrap up by 2018. Further upgrades in 2019 and beyond will include installing a canopy over the escalators to protect them from both inclement weather and homeless people using them as bathrooms, and a new elevator to the Central Subway, expected to debut in 2019.
