This month, the SFPD's Park Station is hosting an essay-writing contest for K-12 students who attend schools within the district's boundaries.
Open until November 30th, the contest, called "Peace On The Streets," is the brainchild of Park Station Captain John Sanford, who also came up with the essay prompt: "If I were a San Francisco police officer, how would I promote peace on the streets?"
"I think being located so close to Haight Street, incorporating the idea of 'Peace' into the topic was a must," says SFPD Officer Vanessa Johnson, the Park Station's liaison for the contest. "We have such a unique culture and history in the Park District and we wanted to be sure to include it."
Johnson said the purpose of the contest was to "keep the lines of communication open between today's youth and the San Francisco Police Department."
Contest entries are to be submitted through area schools. Winners will receive a bicycle and helmet, and the Park Station will host a celebration following the contest on Saturday, Dec. 12th at the Waller Street skate plaza. Festivities are slated to include appearances from mounted, motorcycle, K-9 and SWAT units from the SFPD, as well as games, arts and crafts, face-painting, and a host of local merchants' booths.
To that end, Park Station is currently seeking merchant participants to offer food and products at the event; interested merchants can contact Officer Johnson at vanessa {dot} johnson {at} sfgov {dot} com.
