
While we don't report on every police report filed, we do our best to keep you informed of major crimes and safety concerns in the neighborhood. Here's a selection of crimes reported around SoMa within the second half of October. All details are pulled from the SFPD's daily crime recaps, unless otherwise noted.
Five Central SoMa Robberies
A man, 34, was attacked and robbed by two men at Sixth and Minna Streets at about 1:45am Oct. 28th. The victim was walking home when he was approached by the suspects. The men, ages 35-40, punched him several times, took his cellphone and wallet and fled on foot. No arrest was made.
A shopkeeper was robbed at gunpoint Oct. 21st on the 800 block of Howard Street. The suspect, 31, entered the store at about 11:45am and took two necklaces and two hats before brandishing a handgun. Police were called and the suspect was taken into custody.
Two men were attacked and robbed by a suspect with a pipe around 2am Oct. 15th at Seventh and Hooper streets. The suspect approached the first victim, 42, and swung a pipe at him, causing him to drop his property. When the victim retreated to his tent, the suspect took his property and proceeded to enter the tent, where he struck a second victim, 49, in the head with the pipe before fleeing the scene on a bike. Police did not apprehend the suspect.
A 22-year-old man was pepper-sprayed and robbed at about 11pm Oct. 15th at Zoe and Bryant streets. The suspect, a 25-year-old man, approached the victim and sprayed him with pepper spray, causing the victim to drop his bike. The suspect then took the bike and fled. The suspect was later identified and taken into custody by police.
A man was attacked and robbed by six men at about 8:40pm on Oct. 21st on the 600 block of Minna Street. While the victim was walking home, the suspects, ages 20-25, surrounded him. One suspect grabbed him around the neck, while the other suspects searched his pockets. With the victim's wallet in hand, all six fled on foot. No arrest was made.
Embarcadero Hit & Run
As we previously reported, a cyclist was struck and injured by a vehicle at about 5:30pm Oct. 19 on the Embarcadero. The suspect, driving a Toyota Camry with no license plates, and the victim were both heading southbound on Embarcadero when the suspect attempted to turn right onto Mission, striking the cyclist. The driver fled the scene, while the cyclist was transported to Saint Francis Memorial Hospital with non-critical injuries.
Office Burglar Caught on Camera
Last week, police released a video of a man breaking into an office on the 600 block of Harrison Street and stealing thousands of dollars in computer equipment. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the department's anonymous tip line at (415) 575-4444 or text a tip to TIP411 with SFPD at the beginning of the message.
Serial Auto Burglar Arrested
The SFPD has announced that a man suspected of conducting 22 auto burglaries in San Francisco was arrested by Southern Station officers, with the help of investigators from the city's Major Crimes Unit. With tips gathered over several weeks, officers apprehended the suspect, identified as 24-year-old Sean Gibson of San Francisco, and searched his residence.
The search warrant produced two stolen handguns that were linked to two separate auto burglaries in San Francisco, among other pieces of evidence. Gibson is facing charges for 21 counts of auto burglary, one count of attempted auto burglary, possession of stolen property and possession of tools to commit burglaries. The SFPD is also investigating whether the handguns were used in any recent assaults.
