To close out 2015, we've asked our local neighborhood writers to choose their favorite stories from the past year, and to explain why they loved them so.

Today, we hear from reporter-at-large Stephen Jackson.

I grew up skateboarding, and have been a longtime fan of FTC since the first time I saw Mike Carroll wearing a shirt in Thasher Magazine sometime in the '90s. I get to do a lot of interviews for Hoodline, but my favorites are always those where I feel a personal connection to the subject matter. Kent is a legend in the skate world, but you wouldn't know it talking to him over a beer at The Gold Cane.

FTC has been a San Francisco skateboarding institution since its early origins within Kent Uyehara’s father’s sporting goods store, FTC Ski and Sports.

Since then, Uyehara has built somewhat of a skate empire here in San Francisco and across the globe. We stopped by his store on Haight Street to talk shop with the man who's been involved in the burgeoning skateboarding industry since the 1980s...
