To close out the year, we've asked our local neighborhood writers to choose their favorite stories from the past year, and to explain why they loved them so.
Today, we hear from local editor Geri Koeppel.
There were two main reasons I loved writing this story.
First, it came out during the middle of the heated D3 supervisor race, and it showed me the kind of community pride and passion that exists among people who live there, no matter what.
Secondly, once I got into the research and began checking with my sources in the neighborhood, I was stunned to reveal more and more specifically North Beach-based groups I hadn’t thought of or wasn’t aware of. If I didn’t even know all of the groups and exactly what they do and support, then it stood to reason many others in the community didn’t, either. And it was true: Several people told me how much they appreciated the story and learned a lot from it.
Below is an excerpt from the original story, published on July 8th, 2015.
