Each week we'll be featuring an especially interesting event in the FiDi and Union Square neighborhoods, based on the event submissions we get and what we hear about while we're out on the beat. If you want to be considered for next week, please submit your event here.
If you're in the Union Square area on Thursday, you might want to stop in to the 15th annual Lefty O'Doul's Foundation for Kids Christmas Eve Toy Drive. Drop off a toy and enjoy an extensive schedule of entertainment that includes a special VIP appearance by nine-time Grammy nominee Ledisi, who played legendary gospel singer Mahalia Jackson in the film Selma.
The drive runs from 5am–11pm at Lefty O'Doul's, 333 Geary St. Owner Nick Bovis and Mayor Ed Lee hope to beat last year's record of 10,000 toys and collect 15,000 for kids who need them. They'll be delivered to church toy parties, community centers and several annual toy parties organized by supervisors London Breed and Malia Cohen at two of San Francisco's residential projects.

In addition to Ledisi, the lineup includes 50 caroling kids from Bayview/Hunters Point, the Mission and the Fillmore; public figures like former mayor Willie L. Brown Jr., SFFD Chief Hayes White and SFPD Chief Suhr; numerous local bands; and scores of Santa's helpers. You can also donate a toy online.
