Each week. we'll be featuring an especially interesting event in the neighborhood, based on the event submissions we get and what we hear about while we're out on the beat. If you want to be considered for next week, please submit your event here.
If you're tired of the usual Shania Twain, Sir Mix-A-Lot and Britney Spears, but still want to get your karaoke on, head down to 155 Fell St. tonight. Starting at 8pm, Karaoke Underground will take over the Rickshaw Stop, with punk and indie tunes on hand for those of us who are old enough to remember all the words. Admission is $5; get more info here.
The song selection includes plenty of bands you won't find at standard karaoke joints, like Black Flag, Modest Mouse, the Misfits, Cat Power, the Pixies, Dead Kennedys, Sleater-Kinney, Pavement, Joy Division, Fugazi and Guided By Voices.
“The people who are into this are going to have a personal connection to the song,” Karoke Underground founder Kaleb Asplund told The Village Voice. “You may not love Crass or Bikini Kill, but you’re going to connect with the person who gets up and sings them, because it’s something they really love.”
If crooning Belle & Sebastian to a crowd isn't quite your style, here's a few more artsy events taking place in Hayes Valley over the next few days:
