A school that was shut down by the state in 2004 is being demolished at West St. and 28th St., but good things are to come! The lot is the future home for “The Center,” a central kitchen, instructional farm, and education center for the Oakland Unified School District. Surveying the scene on Tuesday morning, Project Manager Sharon Robinson explained that the three elements of the The Center will work together synergistically by growing bulk ingredients for district school kitchens, and by providing students with educational opportunities. Funding for The Center is provided by Alameda County’s Measure J.
