Commuters on the N-Judah will be facing a longer trip home this evening, as a sinkhole has emerged near the westbound tracks at 4th and Irving. Tipster Karen P. wrote us with some info: "Around 3:45pm, I'd just dropped my kids at home on 3rd Avenue and immediately turned around to run one more errand, and suddenly there was this hole very close to the tracks at the intersection. I called the police non-emergency line & reported it."
Another tipster at the scene says that there are clusters of pedestrians and cars, and that workers are cutting with a saw:

The sinkhole "is small but in the middle of the road ... it's messing up the whole commute," the tipster adds.
Muni is running N-Judah shuttles:
ATTN: #NJudah delayed at 4th & Irving - possible sinkhole. WB N switch back @ Carl/Hillway, EB @ 19th. Shuttles to support line service.

Just got off the N Judah because a pretty sizable sinkhole opened up a foot or two off the westbound tracks. Just an FYI #sanfrancisco #muni

Update, 5:28pm: Hoodline's Walter Thompson says that some westbound trains are now running, albeit slowly. "Two trains with passengers went slowly past/over the sinkhole, but there are also shuttles running," he said.
Update, 1/21: As of 7pm, the hole was reported patched and trains were running normally.
