Each week, we'll feature an especially interesting event in the neighborhood based on the event submissions we get, and what we hear about while we're out on the beat. If you want to be considered for next week, please submit your event here.
If you walk, drive or bike by Patricia's Green this Friday around 8pm, chances are you're going to come across a very large group of cyclists dressed as environmentalist superheroes. This month's San Francisco Bike Party is a celebration of '90s enviro-cartoon Captain Planet.
Each month, Bike Party picks a theme, encouraging its participants to dress up and get creative. Past events have included a Lemmy and David Bowie tribute, a San Francisco safari, and a "pirate parrrrty."
Captain Planet was chosen as the theme in honor of Earth Day, which is taking place later this month. "He’s our hero, and together we're gonna take pollution down to zero!" say Bike Party organizers, quoting the show's earworm of a theme song. "Hop on your bicycle and join us for a two-wheeled revolution towards a greener future."
Aspiring Planeteers should meet up at Patricia's Green this Friday at 7:30pm, and plan to roll out at 8pm. The route is still being determined, but it will be posted later this week on the event's Facebook page.
Unlike Critical Mass, riders aren't encouraged to put asunder safe biking rules. Stay in the right lane, stop at red lights, ride predictably and in control, and when in doubt, shout "bike party!" The power is yours!
If you'd rather not pilot your own two-wheeled Geo-Cruiser, check out this week's selection of other Hayes Valley music shows, lectures and meetings, and visit hoodline.com/events for hundreds of event listings from across the city.
If you have an event you'd like to add to our events calendar, you can submit it here for free. If approved, your event will appear on our new calendar and within the Hoodline news feed, which is seen by thousands of local readers every day.
If you submit, we may also choose to write about it or list it in our weekly neighborhood roundups.
