Each week, we'll feature an especially interesting event in the neighborhood based on the event submissions we get, and what we hear about while we're out on the beat. If you want to be considered for next week, please submit your event here.
Rising rents and shuttered local businesses have been a recurrent theme around the city, and on Thursday night, local residents will have a chance to weigh in on the issue at a community meeting.
"Citywide, commercial rents have risen more than 250 percent over the last 15 years, and in 2014 alone, more than 4,000 small businesses were closed or evicted," reads a flyer for the event. "Join our community meeting to learn how you can play a role in helping preserve your favorite neighborhood business."
Dean Preston is organizing the meeting as part of his run for D5 Supervisor. Neighborhood meetings, or "bootcamps," are part of his campaign strategy to offer a bottom-up approach in a political environment some see as top-down.
The meeting will take place this Thursday, March 24th at 7pm in the Emanuel Church at 1649 Hayes St.
If the above meeting isn't quite up your alley, there are plenty of opportunities for music, dance, art and trivia around the neighborhood this week. Here's the rundown of our picks for what to check out:
If you have an event you'd like to add to our events calendar, you can submit it here for free. If approved, your event will appear on our new calendar and within the Hoodline news feed, which is seen by thousands of local readers every day.
If you submit, we may also choose to write about it or list it in our weekly neighborhood roundups.
