Fantasy bookstore owner shares favorite book

Jack Rems, owner of the sci-fi and fantasy bookstore Dark Carnival as well as comic bookstore The Escapist, shares one of his favorite books.

The Land of Laughs by Jonathan Carroll: “He’s a very, very clever writer and the book is full of surprises. It turns out not to be what you think it is. It begins with a guy going into a bookstore finding a book he’s been looking for for years also picking up a woman he meets there who was looking for the same book. She doesn’t get the book. He gets the book and her. Eventually he sets off to write a biography of the writer of that book, goes to the hometown of the writer. The writer is kind of an amalgam of L. Frank Baum and C.S. Lewis. He’s written fantasy books, series and the fantastic things from his books are alive in this hometown. The talking kite just lots of weird stuff and it turns out to be very sinister — they’re up to something. Not to tell you how it ends but it’s just a wonderful book. I like it a lot.”
