The empty lot on Telegraph Avenue across from Uber’s new future office has been under construction without a particular fate for a while now. So, what’s the deal? 1911 Telegraph is a city-owned vacant lot that will be used for a mixed-use development project, including market and affordable housing, retail stores and a hotel. The process has been lengthy as eight development teams submitted extensive proposals in December 2014, and a decision was just made by the City Council and the Economic Development Committee at the end of February to approve a plan by San Diego developer Oliver McMillan and Oakland’s Strategic Urban Development Alliance construction firm. Many details are still being decided and agreed upon, but this future high-rise construction will radically change the skyline, feel and, most likely, demographics of that part of Oakland.
Independently, even the adjacent Henry J. Kaiser Memorial Park's Remember Them: Champions For Humanity Monument, seems to be getting a minor facelift at the moment.
