Outer Sunset Week: Earth Day Beach Cleanup, Dutch King's Day, LED Poi Performers And More

Both the weekend and Earth Day are once again upon us, Sunsetters. With our postcard-worthy (albeit tempestuous) beach and ample parks, we've got lots of nature to love here in the outer Avenues. Whether you're looking to commune with Mother Earth or pitch in to help pretty her up, this weekend's serving up plenty of opportunities.

On Friday evening, Park Chalet hosts a special Earth Day concert, CD release party, and kids' cabana party by Charity and the JAMband. Dubbed "Phish for families," the band puts on child-centric, parent-friendly mini-festivals and dance parties. Come celebrate the release of their new album, fittingly entitled "Earth."

On Saturday morning, your local chapter of the ocean activist network Surfrider Foundation hosts an Earth Day cleanup at Ocean Beach. To help out, grab your gloves, grabbers, and/or buckets and meet at Stairwell 17 to give the beach a spring cleaning.

Once you've filled up on do-good, feel-good endorphins, you might want to head over to Golden Gate Park's Dutch windmill for Dutch King's Day, San Francisco's rendition of the Netherlands' biggest holiday. Orange is the Dutch national color, so throw on your Giants gear, and enjoy Dutch kids' games, a flea market, food, beer, and dancing.

The fun continues Sunday morning with the San Francisco-est of triathlons (despite being the brainchild of New Yorkers), Wanderlust 108. The "mindful triathlon" eschews biking and swimming for yoga and guided meditation, perfect for those seeking inner peace, or just an easier pace. To keep things interesting, a DJ, slackliners, hula hoopers, and acroyogis will also be present.

Later that evening, Burning Man camp SNAP (Silly Nerdy Activities Playground) hosts an Ocean Beach bonfire and fundraiser to buy an electric generator or two for their camp. In exchange for a $5 suggested donation you'll get poi performances, a poi class, bonfire-scorched s'mores, an advice booth, and in true Burner fashion, copious hugs.
