There's no such thing as free lunch, right? Tommy Devol and Stan Rosenthal are challenging the adage.
For several Saturdays this year, they've set up a stand in front of their house at Castro and 14th streets to give away free waffles and coffee.
It's called The Waffle Stoop.
There is NO catch.
Seriously, they aren't selling anything — goods or dogma — and the meal is completely free.
Tommy and Stan decided to start giving away waffles for a really simple reason: they had an excess of baking mix and an underused waffle maker.
Stan estimates they give away 15 or so waffles every time they are out.
"About 90% of people who stop by are neighbors," he said. "Some are homeless, some aren't."
Lately, they have been stepping up the waffle game with homemade blueberry and brown sugar syrups, and they're always using different types of leftover flours they have around the house. Once it was coconut flour; another week it was whole-wheat pastry flour.
So far, nobody has tried to pay Stan and Tommy, but people show their gratitude in different ways. They have received offerings of weed in exchange for waffles more than a few times.
