Padrecito translates as "the good priest," but there's nothing monkish about Cole Valley's only Mexican restaurant, which offers more than 80 different tequilas, homemade tortillas and fresh takes on familiar dishes like tacos and enchiladas.

One of the neighborhood's most popular spots since opening in 2013, Padrecito filled the void left by Eos Wine Bar, which occupied the space for nearly 15 years. (Padrecito owners Sam Josi and Luis Contreras also own Mamacita, a highly-rated Mexican eatery in the Marina.) Between its weekday happy hour, dinner service, takeout and weekend brunches, many locals stop in a few times each week.

The building's history reflects Cole Valley's ever-changing nature. Initially a grocery and a variety store, it became the headquarters for the Diggers, a group of countercultural anarchists, who were later kicked out by a pet shop.

Padrecito's menu, which uses many ingredients from the restaurant's sister farm in Sonoma County, has something to offer nearly every palate. Several types of ceviche and chilaquiles are available, as well tacos made with traditional ingredients like goat barbacoa.

Vegetarians and vegans have several options, including a variety of salads, hot-from-the-fryer tortilla chips, tacos, chunky guacamole and salsas that run from mild to wild.

Padrecito's decor is a hodgepodge of elements from Mexican culture: movie posters, vintage photos and Day of the Dead masks. Unfinished wood and rough-hewn tables give it a hacienda feel that's accentuated by tile work and other touches.

Although walk-ins can usually find a seat at the bar and heated sidewalk seating is available, reservations are still recommended. Parking is scarce in Cole Valley, so take the N-Judah to the restaurant—the eastbound stop is right outside the restaurant's front door.

Padrecito (415-742-5505) is located at 901 Cole Street. The restaurant opens at 5:30pm on weekdays and 5pm on weekends; weekend brunch is served from 10am -2:15pm. Reservations are recommended.
