In addition to even more impending retail shuffles and the usual spate of weekend goings-on, this week the Upper Haight saw a mysterious explosion that rattled windows around the Page and Ashbury intersection.

As we reported, the boom was hear at 10:30pm on Wednesday night. SFPD was unable to identify what caused it, as there was so resulting smoke or fire after the bang. There is speculation that it was an M80, but that remains unconfirmed.

Also, it's Labor Day weekend! Ambiance on Haight is having a sale, so stop in now through Monday and enjoy an extra 25 percent off sale items. Burton is also having a sale through Monday; all products will be on sale, and you can find "big discounts" on winter gear.

Last night, the Red Vic hosted an art opening called "Urban Upstarts": "hopeful, inspired and motivated to have a better life, young artists from San Francisco Bay Area urban environments express their aspirations in a multi-disciplinary art exhibit." The art will be up through at 1665 Haight St. through September, so swing by for a look.

This weekend, you can catch some live music at the Milk Bar. Tonight at 9pm, they'll have Death Valley Girls, who describe themselves as "an acid-tripping science experiment that’s been buried alive, and resurrected as a sexually liberated dystopian chain-gang." Joining them will be Queen Crescent, Annie Girl and the Flight, and Mad Alchemy Liquid Light Show.

And coming up next week, on Tuesday the 7th, Booksmith presents J. T. Leroy, aka Laura Albert. Back in the '90s, San Francisco-based writer Laura Albert wrote several books under the alias J. T. LeRoy, even going so far as hiring an actor to play LeRoy at live events. Once Albert was uncovered in 2005, she was sued for fraud and faced criticism for deceiving fans with what were presented as autobiographical details.

Albert will be presenting two J. T. LeRoy novels, Sarah, and The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things, and talking about the upcoming documentary about her life and fame.

Here are the rest of the events to look forward to this week, plus a roundup of Upper Haight news.
