Booksmith Spinoff 'The Bindery' Launches Today At Second ActPhotos: Camden Avery/Hoodline

As of today, the former Second Act space at 1727 Haight St. is beginning its transformation into The Bindery, a new business and event space from Christin Evans and Praveen Madan, owners of neighboring The Booksmith (1644 Haight St.)

The newly minted legacy business is kicking things off in the space with a "Literary Wonderland" holiday pop-up, which launches today and will continue through Christmas.

Inside the former food vendor marketplace, visitors will now find tables of books suited for giving, including cookbooks and gardening books, a handful of literary favorites, and loads of children's picture books. There are also some gifts for sale, including wooden alphabet blocks, flasks, paperweights, brass plant misters, and hand-printed children's onesies.

Fans of Second Act's regular comedy nights and students at its children's music classes need not fret—the space will continue to offer all of its regular events until year's end (along with some possible readings and events from the Booksmith, which are TBD).

After the holidays have passed, the Booksmith team will kick off a more substantial renovation of the space, with the goal of turning it into a bookstore, cafe, and events space, serving beer and wine from The Alembic. We'll have more on its plans for the next phase in 2017, but for now, stop by to start checking off items on your holiday shopping list.
