A fire broke out at Geary and Hyde Streets last night just after 10:00pm, shutting down traffic on both streets.

The fire appears to have originated in the basement below the former California Smoke Shop, the most recent ground-floor retail tenant at 819 Geary St.

According to the San Francisco Fire Department, the blaze was contained in the basement; there were no injuries and no one was displaced.

The location has since been reported as closed, but people were at the business last night salvaging items from smoke and water damage.

Six fire engines and several ambulances responded to the scene, snarling traffic for more an hour, which led authorities to reroute cars and 38-Geary service northbound on Hyde.
