'Buca Di Beppo' Shutters After 20 Years In SoMaThe now-closed Buca di Beppo on Howard St. | Photos: Elaine Gavin/Hoodline

Italian family-style chain restaurant Buca di Beppo has officially closed its doors in SoMa earlier this month. The closure marks the end of a 20-year run at the location; according to SFGate, Buca di Beppo first opened at 855 Howard St. location (between 4th and 5th streets) in 1997.

A tipster first alerted Hoodline to the closure; a sign posted on the door says its last official day was August 12th, and thanks customers for their patronage.

Now, the closest locations are in other parts of the Bay Area, including Palo Alto, Campbell and San Jose.

Office spaces may be coming to the building; in late June, a change-of-use application was filed with Planning that seeks to change the location from a restaurant to an office space.

According to SocketSite, the parcel is currently zoned for a height of 130 feet, which would be a significant increase from its current height.

Buca di Beppo first opened in 1993 as a small Italian eatery located in a basement in Minneapolis. Now owned by Planet Hollywood, the chain operates more than 90 locations in 28 states, as well as in the United Kingdom and United Arab Emirates.

San Francisco’s location has been removed from the company's website. When we reached out to the corporate office for more details on the closure, we did not receive a response.

Hoodline also contacted Planning for more information regarding the potential office space and what type of construction would be involved. If we hear back, we'll update this article.

Thanks to tipster Ryan M. for letting us know about the closure. See something interesting you want to share with us? Text Hoodline and we’ll see what we can find: 415-200-3233.
