Waxman's Restaurant & Pop-Up Melt Into Memory

After just over a year in operation, Waxman's Restaurant—from James Beard Award-winning chef Jonathan Waxman—along with with its companion pop-up chicken joint JBird, has quietly thrown in the towel.

Eater reports the restaurant has permanently closed, which was confirmed by a representative from Ghirardelli Square.

Yelp reviewer Robert E. confirmed the closing of JBird as well, noting that he found "only furniture when we tried to have dinner there for Labor Day."

So far, there's no official word on why either eatery decided to close up shop.

Waxman's Pizzeria next door shuttered sometime in March. "This was my favorite pizza in the city! So sad the pizzeria is closed," lamented Chris S. on Yelp.

JBird was meant to be a permanent pop-up of sorts, serving Waxman's signature roasted chicken while the main restaurant underwent renovations starting on August 1st. But it appears that the renovations have stalled, and will no longer be moving forward.

Meanwhile, a message remains on the restaurant's website stating it's closed for renovations. The Yelp page indicates the same but adds, "See you in September."

We reached out to both Waxman's and JBird; if we hear back, we'll update this story.
