Police are investigating a stabbing in the South of Market neighborhood early this morning that left the victim fighting for his life.

The incident occurred around 4:20 a.m. on the unit block of Hawthorne Street between Mission and Folsom streets, where a 56-year-old man was found suffering from wounds inflicted with an edged weapon.

The victim told police that he'd been stabbed, but was not able to provide any details about the suspect or the circumstances of the assault. He was transported to a hospital with life-threatening wounds, and police are still seeking a suspect in the case.

Anyone who has information about this incident is encouraged to contact SFPD via the department's anonymous tip line at 415-575-4444, or text TIP411 with "SFPD" at the start of the message.

Here’s why we usually don’t include suspect descriptions in crime reports.
