A coin-operated laundry in the Mission district is the latest in a string of laundromat closures citywide. A note posted outside The Wash Quarters (985 Valencia St. at 21st Street) informs readers that the facility will run its final spin cycle this Sunday.

According to the message left by management thanking customers for "your support over the years," the property's landlord raised the rent from $4,800 to $11,500 per month.

Mission Local reports that owner Paul Fiol paid $2,300 a month when he first rented the space 16 years ago and had two years left on his lease.

Until 2016, vegan restaurant Herbivore occupied the front of the building's ground floor. After it closed, Duna held an 18-month lease before moving to a permanent location

That same year, building owner Nasser Apartments prepared to reconfigure the building by consolidating both ground-floor spaces and remodeling. Fiol prepared for the changes, but the plans were later canceled.

According to Mission Local, Fiol briefly hoped to move across the street when a property owner offered the parcel to the city, but the plan fell apart because "the owner of the building was asking for as much as $18 million."

Residents seeking alternatives in the neighborhood can visit nearby Mission Laundromat (3282 22nd St. between Valencia and Bartlett) and Nice & Clean Laundromat (3225 21st St. between Mission and San Carlos).
