A verbal altercation in SoMa early this morning escalated to a near-fatal stabbing, according to police.

The incident took place in Mint Plaza near Mint and Jessie streets around 2:20 a.m. when a 21-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman who were walking got into a dispute with four male suspects.

After one of the suspects sprayed the victims with pepper spray, a second assailant reportedly lunged at the woman with a skateboard, striking her in the head. After all four suspects fled the scene, she looked at her companion and realized that he'd been stabbed in the chest.

No arrests have been made in the case, and the stabbing victim was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.
