A new Caribbean restaurant has debuted in the neighborhood. Located in the former Getaway spot at 1400 Meridian Place NW in Columbia Heights, the new arrival is called Karribean Kitchen.
Jamaican food is the primary influence here. Look for jerk chicken, patties stuffed with beef, chicken or vegetables, and the goat's head soup known as manish water. There are also numerous curries, from goat to shrimp, and salmon, king fish, tilapia and snapper entrees.
For drinks, try the house punch, or ask for rum cocktails or beer from the bar.
With a five-star rating out of seven reviews on Yelp so far, Karribean Kitchen has been warmly received by patrons.
David G., who was among the first Yelpers to review the new spot on August 25, wrote, "This unassuming spot brings some serious Caribbean flavor to Columbia Heights. We had a great chat with our host, Nicolette, one of the owners. She and her father Michael just opened the place and haven't yet finished the upstairs or patio eating space that should be opening soon."
Yelper Raymond W. added, “Inside is spacious and bright with ample seating and a good-sized bar. The hostesses were very nice and professional. I could eat a trough of the spinach alone.”
Swing on by to take a peek for yourself: Karribean Kitchen is open from noon–10 p.m. on Monday-Thursday, noon–2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 1 p.m.–9 p.m. on Sunday.
