Crime incidents in Fort Lauderdale saw an overall increase last week, for the third week in a row, according to data from SpotCrime, which collects data from police agencies and validated sources. Incidents rose to 145 for the week of January 14, up from 142 the week before.
The offenses that increased the most were robbery and assault. Robbery rose to three incidents last week, from zero the week before. Assault went from one to three.
While somewhat smaller categories, there was also a notable percentage increase in theft, from zero incidents per week to two, and in burglary, from zero to one.
There was one reported shooting last week. That represents an increase from zero incidents the previous week.
There were 135 reports of "other" crimes, a decrease of six from the previous week. SpotCrime's broad "other" category includes a variety of offenses like fraud, trespassing, public disturbance and traffic violations. Of those incidents, 133 involved arrests, such as for drug possession, down from 135 reported arrests the week before.
As far as where crime is concentrated in the city, Riverland, Sailboat Bend, and Melrose Manors had the most reported incidents last week. Riverland and Sailboat Bend were at the top of the list the previous week as well.
Riverland experienced the highest growth in crime; incidents in the neighborhood have been rising for two weeks in a row. Crime reports in Coral Ridge Country Club also rose, after declining the week before, and incidents in Riverside Park are up considerably as well.
Regarding when crime most often occurs, Thursdays, Fridays and Tuesdays saw the most reported crimes last week. The largest increase from the previous week occurred on Fridays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, while incidents on Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays went down. Early afternoon, late afternoon and after midnight saw the most crime last week.
