Crime incidents in Alexandria saw an overall bump last month, after a previous decline, according to data from SpotCrime, which collects data from police agencies and validated sources.

Incidents rose by 8.6 percent, from 603 in December to 655 in January.

Most types of crimes decreased this month, led by theft. Theft rose from 173 reported incidents in December to 177 in January.

There were 36 vandalism reports last month. Vandalism incidents remained at about the same level as in the previous month.

Among the few types of offenses that saw a downturn last month, assault reports went from 79 to 74. Burglary incidents fell from 12 to nine, and robbery incidents went down from 12 to nine.

When it comes to crime patterns in different areas of the city, Alexandria West, North Ridge-Rosemont and Braddock Road Metro saw the largest increase from December to January. Old Town North, Northeast and Landmark-Van Dom also saw considerable percentage increases in crime offenses for the month, although they continue to have lower overall crime levels.

Wednesdays, Thursdays and Tuesdays produced the most reported crimes last month. The largest increase from the previous month occurred on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Tuesdays, while incidents on Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays went down. Early afternoon, late night and late afternoon saw the most crime last month on average each day.
