Interested in adopting a cat — or just gazing at some furry felines near you? There are dozens of darling cats up for adoption at animal shelters in and around San Diego.

Animal shelters and pet rescue groups work hard to care for unhoused pets and connect them to loving homes. Hoodline used data from Petfinder to power this roundup of cats currently available for adoption.

(Details like pet availability, training, vaccinations and other features are based on data provided by Petfinder and may be subject to change; contact the shelter for the latest information.)

Possum, domestic shorthair mix

Possum is an adorable male domestic shorthair mix currently residing at Anna's Cats.

He is happy to keep company with other cats. He's already house-trained, vaccinated and neutered.

Notes from Possum's caretakers:

He's 10 months old and was taken from a hoarding situation. He has been neutered, vaccinated, dewormed, de-flead, and tested FelV negative. Possum is a mellow-for-a-kitten guy who is submissive and sweet. He's very playful, social and cuddly, once he gets to know you.

Murray, domestic shorthair and Bombay mix

Murray is an adorable male domestic shorthair and Bombay mix currently housed at Anna's Cats.

Murray loves dogs. No other cats, please: He is looking for cat-free household. He's vaccinated, neutered and house-trained. Murray is a special needs pet, so please inquire about his specific care requirements.

Here's what Murray's friends at Anna's Cats think of him:

This guy is a friendly, healthy kitten who loves to play with toys, cuddle, and wrestle with his foster brothers. He has been spayed, dewormed, vaccinated and microchipped. He has also tested FelV positive, a contagious retrovirus which may lower his lifespan. He may or may not fight off the virus as he gets older. If he remains FelV positive, he will likely remain happy and healthy for a year or two. when he may become sick and require euthanasia. Until then, he is just a normal kitten! He must also be kept away from direct contact with other cats (unless they are also FelV positive) as long as he remains positive. Please email with a little about your indoor-only home if you'd like to give this guy a chance.

Joellee Oreo, domestic shorthair mix

Joellee Oreo is a winsome female domestic shorthair mix currently housed at San Diego Humane Society.

She is already spayed.

From Joellee Oreo's current caretaker:

How I arrived: I was brought in by my previous owner on June 24, 2019. I can be pretty shy when I meet new people, and it might take me a little longer than most to open up. When I do adjust, I'll come right up to you and meow for attention. I prefer to keep all four paws on the ground — I do not enjoy being cuddled. I do love getting soft pets on my head and some nice cheek rubs! Children make me pretty nervous, so I would prefer to go to a home with adults only. My Personality Color Code is orange, meaning I'm vivacious, enthusiastic, bubbly, vibrant and cheerful. Weight: 15 pounds; age: 11 years.

Meisha, Maine coon mix

Meisha is a charming female Maine coon mix being cared for at San Diego Humane Society.

Meisha needs special time to bond with you: She'll need a home free of other cats. She's spayed.

Here's what Meisha's friends at San Diego Humane Society think of her:

How I arrived: I was brought in by my previous owner on March 23, 2019. My Personality Color Code is blue, meaning I'm bashful, shy, introverted, timid and coy. I have been good with dogs in my previous home, but with any new friends I'd appreciate a nice slow introduction. I have also done well with children, so long as they are respectful of me once I am comfortable with them. Weight: 8.46 pounds; age: almost 11 years.

Kuro, domestic longhair mix

Kuro is a handsome male domestic longhair mix being cared for at San Diego Humane Society.

He's already been neutered.

Here's what Kuro "tells" his friends at San Diego Humane Society:

How I arrived: I was brought in by my previous owner on Oct. 29, 2019. My Personality Color Code is blue, meaning I'm bashful, shy, introverted, timid and coy. Loud noises and busy homes make me nervous, so I would prefer to be in a calm, quiet household with older, respectful children who can understand my boundaries. I've never lived with a dog before but a small, mellow dog might be okay. Weight: 8.3 pounds; age: 1 year.

Chloe, domestic shorthair mix

Chloe is spayed.

Chloe "tells" hers friends at San Diego Humane Society:

How I arrived: I was brought in by my previous owner on Sept. 16, 2019. Why I am the one for you: My Personality Color Code is blue, meaning I'm bashful, shy, introverted, timid and coy.  The world can be a scary place for me, so I would prefer to go to a home with a patient family that will give me all the time I need to warm up! Once I get comfortable, you'll see what a sweet and friendly gal I can be. I can be a little sassy sometimes, so I would prefer to live in an adult-only home where everyone could respect my boundaries (but older children might be okay). Weight: 11 pounds; age: age: 2 years.
