Just weeks after closure, Haight Street's Rasputin space already has a new tenantPhoto: Camden Avery/Hoodline

Less than a month after Rasputin Music suddenly closed its last remaining San Francisco store (1672 Haight St.), a new tenant is setting up shop.

The new operation occupying the 4,000-plus-square-foot retail space is Flamingos Vintage, a by-the-pound vintage clothing retailer founded in Spain in 2009. It now operates nearly two dozen stores across Europe, along with a handful of U.S. stores in New York, Austin, Los Angeles, Houston and Miami.

By Flamingos' own assessment, the company is in the fast lane for global expansion into Asia, the Americas, and more of Europe — and with 35 stores now open globally (Haight Street will be the 36th), it will likely raise some alarm bells for being unpermitted formula retail.

City planning laws require a chain with 11 or more global locations to apply for a special permit to operate in some neighborhoods, including the Haight. Public records don't currently show Flamingos having applied for such a permit, and representatives for the company's corporate offices didn't reply to a request for comment.

Based on a peek inside the store, Flamingos will offer an array of trendy vintage clothes, shoes and accessories largely in line with Haight Street's other vintage shops, like Wasteland, Decades of Fashion, Indigo, Buffalo Exchange, Held Over, Crossroads, Trove and Relic.

Another multinational vintage retailer, Japan-based 2nd Street, is currently undergoing the Planning process to open a block away, at 1560 Haight St. Its application was filed last month, and remains under review.

An employee at Flamingos confirmed that the store is targeting a mid-December opening, and that its hours of operation would probably be 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. daily.
