Its creators promise the funniest and most relevant Pastorela yet. (Play is spoken in English with traditional Spanish Christmas songs).

'Scrooge in Rouge'

From the event description:

The show must go on! So when 17 of a raggedy 20-member acting troupe in England fall victim to food poisoning the night before their performance of "A Christmas Carol," it's up to the three remaining cast members to deliver a stellar show. From miserly old Scrooge to the innocent young Tiny Tim, the trio tackles nearly two dozen characters in this hilariously twisted take on the holiday classic, swapping genders and going from living to dead and back again quicker than you can say "Bah, humbug!" along the way.

When: Thursday, Dec. 19-Saturday, Dec. 21, all at 8 p.m.
Where: Ocean Beach Playhouse and Arts Center, 4944 Newport Ave.
Price: $20 - $34

'Pastorela 2.0'

From the event description:

Every year for nearly three decades, the Mercado Nochebuena has put on a traditional pastorela. But times are changing. The mercado is struggling to keep tradition alive while competing with a brave new world where groceries are bought online and communities are forged through social media. The future is not looking good for the store. In what appears to be a Christmas miracle, for the first time ever, the Mercado Nochebuena Pastorela will be broadcast as a live musical event for a major network.

When: Friday, Dec. 20-Sunday, Dec. 22; curtain times vary
Where: Don Powell Theatre, 5400 Campanile Mall
Price: $10
