A new Irish bar, Casements, has opened for business in the Mission at 2351 Mission St. (and 20th), formerly home to Gashead Tavern.

Owned by SF bar veterans Gillian Fitzgerald (Virgil’s Sea Room), Sean O’Donovan (Mission Bowling Club), and Chris Hastings (Lookout), Casements is meant to be a new take on an Irish pub. While there's Guinness on draft and soda bread on the menu, the decor and cocktail list are upscale, reflecting the contemporary pubs of modern-day Ireland.

The drink list focuses on cocktails made with Irish craft spirits, such as whiskey, gin and poitín (potato moonshine). Check out the Bloody Mary with Dingle brand vodka, the Samhain Old Fashioned with cardamom bitters, and the frozen Ode to Orleans, which is made with Powers whiskey, Kerrygold Irish cream and cold brew from local roasters Andytown.

For those who prefer beer, the pints of Guinness are supplemented by a selection of craft brews, both imported and domestic.

The kitchen at Casements serves up a full dinner menu from 6–10 p.m. daily. Options include Irish seafood chowder, chicken curry and savory hand pies from local bakery Revenge Pies (with vegan and vegetarian options available).

With a 4.5-star rating out of eight reviews on Yelp so far, the new arrival has been warmly received by patrons.

Yelper Paul P., who reviewed Casements on Jan. 15, wrote, “I see a lot of passion put into this establishment. Definitely coming back."

H S. added, "Great savory pie and soda bread, friendly and accommodating staff, solid drinks. Comfortable and mellow."

Intrigued? Stop in to try it for yourself. Casements is open from 4 p.m.–2 a.m. on weekdays and 3 p.m.–2 a.m. on weekends.
