A number of SF institutions have started throwing Thursday-night events to draw crowds at off-hours, including the Exploratorium and the California Academy of Sciences. Now, the Ferry Building has joined the fray.

Starting this coming Thursday, February 20, the Ferry Building will host “Third Thursdays" on, as the name suggests, the third Thursday of every month. The event kicks off at 6 p.m., and many of the building's shops and restaurants, which normally close at 7, will stay open until 9 p.m. for the occasion.

The event will feature live music from Luminescent Grand and their LED piano, performances by Oakland teen dance group TURFinc, and interactive art installations from ArtIsMobilUS.

Several vendors will also be featuring special deals on food and drinks, including half-off bottles of wine at MarketBar, sundae specials at Humphry Slocombe and a slice of lemon pie with a glass of prosecco for $13 at Frog Hollow Farm Cafe.

Visit Third Thursdays' Facebook event page for more information on all the deals.

La Cocina, San Francisco's culinary incubator for immigrants and women of color, is bringing back its annual Week of Women in Food from March 2-8.

The event features seven nights of special dinners and cocktail parties, each teaming up a pair or trio of La Cocina graduates at one of their restaurants, or at another notable local restaurant.

One chef featured each night will be a future tenant at La Cocina's upcoming Tenderloin food hall, set to open later this year.

The team-ups include Binita Pradhan (of Nepalese eatery Bini's Kitchen) with the staff of Moroccan restaurant Mourad; a Mexican dinner from chefs Dilsa Lugo (Los Cilantros) and Veronica Salazar (El Huarache Loco); and a collaboration between Senegalese chef Nafy Flatley (Teranga) and Indian-American chef Preeti Mistry (formerly of Juhu Beach Club) at Almanac Beer Co.

Each event is ticketed, with prices ranging from $45-100. Proceeds will support La Cocina's incubator program and the food hall.

Taishan Cuisine (781 Broadway)

Tipster Al M. has informed us that Taishan Cuisine has softly opened at 718 Broadway. As the name suggests, Taishan Cuisine specializes in food from a region in China's Guangdong province, which is similar to Cantonese fare but has more of an emphasis on steamed and braised dishes.

The menu features appetizers such as wontons and fried fish balls, as well as larger dishes such as braised lamb or beef stew, braised pig feet, and steamed vermicelli with shrimp.

It's a good spot for night owls: hours are 5 p.m. to 3 a.m. daily.

Thanks to tipster Al M. If you've seen something new (or closing) in the neighborhood, text your tips and photos to (415) 200-3233, or email [email protected] If we use your info in a story, we'll give you credit
