The Bay Area's shelter-in-place order has brought countless events usually held as in-person gatherings online. We're aiming to support local businesses in San Francisco and Oakland by highlighting five of these events each day.

Got a suggestion for an online event based in SF or Oakland? Email our events reporter, Teresa Hammerl.

Here's your SF event calendar for Monday, April 27. Take a yoga class focused on laughing, hear what a three-Michelin-star chef has to say about the current crisis or learn how old paintings can travel safely — all from the comfort of your couch.

Keeping Art Safe: Packing up 17th-century paintings

Paintings conservator Tricia O'Regan oversaw a multi-year project to design how three paintings by Peter Paul Rubens, loaned to the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto, Canada, could safely travel across the continent.

The project included help from a conservator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and craters at the J. Paul Getty Museum. In the end, the three paintings traveled in crates with no need for vitrines and glazing.

In this live conversation, O'Regan will guide attendees step-by-step through the process for a painting like this to go on loan, from the moment an exhibition is planned, to studying its condition, outreach to conservators at other museums, and finally, the moment its hung at the host museum.

Laughter Yoga

Shelter in relaxation with weekly laughter yoga classes on Zoom. Laughter taps the inner well of joy and connects us to others.

Most people love to laugh, but we don’t do it enough or are dependent on funny movies or other forms of comedy to stimulate laughter. Laughter Yoga attempts to liberate students from this dependency, offering the freedom to laugh anywhere at any time, leading to numerous mental, emotional, and physiological benefits.

Through this practice, expect to play with various Laughter Yoga techniques, as well as gentle yoga asana (yoga poses), breathing, and relaxation techniques to promote joy, wellness, and ease.

When: Monday, April 27,  5 p.m.

How to join: Via Zoom (see instructions in the Facebook event)
