A Family Divided

Millions of families are currently separated — by the pandemic, immigration policies or war. In this time of chaos, many fiction writers have chosen to explore the impact of family separation trauma. This Litquake talk highlights four writers who've released related books this spring.

Donna Hemans' "Tea by the Sea" follows a mother searching for her long-lost daughter, stolen by the girl's father the day after her birth. In Aimee Liu's "Glorious Boy," a couple and their child are separated after the Japanese occupy the Andaman Islands in World War II.

"Her Sister's Tattoo," by Ellen Meeropol, tells of two sisters, Vietnam War protesters, whose relationship is destroyed when one sends the other to prison in a plea deal. And in "Subduction," Kristen Millares Young tells the story of an anthropologist seeking solace from her broken family in an indigenous whaling village.
