Adventure and excitement turned to panic and distress for the Currier family as their sailboat trip came to a sudden and unexpected halt when a pod of orcas attacked their vessel. A thrilling journey across the Atlantic Ocean had led them near the coast of southern Spain, but their explorations were cut short when the increasingly common and peculiar orca behavior set its sights on their craft, Argo.
The intense encounter lasted merely four minutes, as the family did their best to navigate the situation. Despite their attempts to protect their boat and ward off the orca pod, Argo's rudder was destroyed, leaving them stranded in the Strait of Gibraltar. As the Currier's distress call echoed across the water, a rescue team came to their aid, towing the damaged vessel to safety.
Orca attacks on boats are alarmingly on the rise in the region, with the highly social and intelligent creatures seemingly teaching one another this behavior. Scientists, however, remain uncertain whether these actions are playful or malicious. As for the Argo, Cal Currier sold the damaged boat to a marine repair shop, thus ending this chapter of their maritime adventures.
