Marco Antonio Gramajo, a 31-year-old parolee residing in San Rafael, was arrested in connection with a daytime shooting incident in downtown San Rafael, causing alarm and confusion among residents and witnesses KRON4 reported. The San Rafael Police Department (SRPD) was alerted to a fight near Fourth and D streets on June 24, but officers on the scene could not find any evidence of it according to CBS News.
However, an eyewitness who flagged down an officer provided a different story, reporting that the suspect, later identified as Gramajo, had fired a gun at a victim who was no longer at the scene the SRPD stated. Upon investigation, the officer discovered a spent shell casing and an intact bullet, but no sign of a shooting victim, blood or any other evidence to suggest someone had been shot.
Adding to the confusion, a separate victim soon approached the officer with a cell phone photo of Gramajo, claiming that the man had attempted to rob him at gunpoint and threatened to kill him according to the SRPD. This victim managed to flee, with Gramajo pursuing him and getting into an altercation with a third person, during which he pulled out his gun again and fired a round. Both Gramajo and the potential shooting victim fled the scene before officers arrived, leaving authorities without a clear understanding of the incident's timeline or the identity of the initial victim.
Despite the uncertainty, the cell phone photo provided a breakthrough in the case, allowing a detective familiar with Gramajo to identify him and confirm that he was on parole CBS News reported. California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation agents tracked Gramajo down at his residence, arresting him after a brief struggle on June 29, almost a week after the incident according to KRON4. A search of his residence revealed a firearm with no serial number, commonly known as a "ghost gun," adding further intrigue to the case.
GRAMajo has been charged with a slew of offenses, including being a felon in possession of a firearm, felony assault with a firearm, felony attempted robbery, felony criminal threats, felony willful discharge of a firearm with gross negligence, felony carrying a loaded and unregistered firearm in public, and misdemeanor resisting a peace officer per the SRPD. Meanwhile, San Rafael police are still searching for the potential victim of the first reported shooting, who remains unidentified KRON4 noted. Hospitals in the area have not reported treating any shooting victims, suggesting that the individual may have left the scene uninjured.
Authorities are urging anyone with information related to this crime to contact the San Rafael Police Department at (415) 485-3000 or submit tips online at their website. As the investigation continues, it remains unknown whether the initial altercation and subsequent shooting will prove to be random acts of violence or part of a larger narrative involving Gramajo's history or connections. Whatever the case, the arrest of a dangerous individual and the removal of an unregistered firearm from the streets of San Rafael are positive developments for community safety.
