It was a tragic turn of events in San Francisco when Yowhannes Tewolde, a well-respected store clerk at Richmond Market, passed away from injuries sustained in a brutal attack. The man known affectionately as John to residents in the city's Richmond District, was beaten with a bat while trying to stop a theft in his store, according to CBS News.

The incident occurred last week when the suspect entered the market, stealing water and attempting to make off with beer. Tewolde attempted to intervene, ultimately resulting in the assailant stealing a bat from him and using it in a violent assault that left Tewolde unconscious. He was transported to the hospital with significant injuries and passed away on Tuesday, as reported by KTVU.

Tewolde's tragic death has left the community in shock and mourning. Residents in the area knew him for his dedication to his work, his friendliness, and the cat Nancy who would often be seen in the store with him. His daughter, Meron Tewolde, spoke to the press about her father's honorable character, revealing that even after recent heart surgery, he continued to work and serve the community he loved.

San Francisco Police Department has yet to make any arrests in connection to the case. However, this remains an ongoing investigation where the authorities are urging the public to come forward with any relevant information.

As the community continues to grieve the loss of John, his family asks for prayers and seeks justice for his untimely death. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help with the family's expenses.

This tragic incident casts a dark shadow over the once lively neighborhood, with Marjan Philhour, co-founder of the Balboa Village Merchants Association, expressing her concerns about the safety of the area. As a resident herself, she tells CBS News that she has become more vigilant while closely monitoring her children's whereabouts.
